Reading
How will I read?
Blind and visually impaired people can continue to enjoy reading in a range of accessible formats, these include: Large print, Moon, Braille and Audio cassette/CD/DVD.
Under the Disability Discrimination Act, information should be available to you in a range of formats (large print, audio or Braille) from any organisations that you have dealings with. This includes: Banks, Utilities, Councils and Social Services. Please contact these organisations to inform them of your information-format requirements so that they are able to meet your needs.
Henshaws Society for Blind People offers Braille classes from our Manchester and Merseyside Centres for anyone wishing to learn how to write and read Braille.
Various aids and equipment are also available to help blind and visually impaired read. These include: CCTVs, Eezee-Readers (small, portable CCTV), magnifiers, task lighting and tape machines/CD players.
Henshaws also provides IT classes and guidance on using accessible software that can aid reading.
The Talking Newspaper Association provides national newspapers and magazines on audio tape, computer disk, e-mail, Internet download and CD-ROM for visually impaired and disabled people.
The National Library for the Blind also provides a range of books in Braille, Moon and Audio format which are delivered free of charge throughout the UK.
