Volunteering

You make all the difference when you volunteer with Henshaws. We're always looking for people to help out - in the community, in the office and on the road!

We wouldn't be able to run vital services to blind and visually impaired people with you! We rely on the dedication of volunteers who share our commitment to helping where it is needed most.

How can I help Henshaws?

We have a wide range of volunteer opportunities and should match you with something to suit - things like:

• Organising social activities and outings
• Mentoring or home visiting
• Offering support to patients at hospital eye clinics
• Helping with administration
• Volunteer driving
• IT student support
• Fundraising

Do I need qualifications or experience?

Not at all! We'll give you all the training you need and our staff will give ongoing support. Our volunteers are as varied as they come - some are retired, some are students and some are just seeking new skills and experiences.

Will it cost me anything?

We refund all reasonable out-of-pocket expenses including travel. If you're claiming benefits, these shouldn't be affected by volunteering.

How much time do I have to give?

That's up to you... give as much or as little time as you want. We have roles to suit everybody.

How would it benefit me?

Most volunteers say they support Henshaws because they enjoy it so much! We also offer choice, excellent training, friendship, opportunities to develop skills, the satisfaction of helping others and giving something back to the local community.

What's the application process?

You'll complete an application form, an 'Enhanced Criminal Records Disclosure' form and give two references. We will also invite you to an informal chat, which is a good chance to tell us what you want to get out of your volunteering. Our staff will organise training before you get started and will offer support during your volunteering.
