Legacies
In 1837 Henshaws Society for Blind People was founded as a result of a legacy left by Oldham businessman Thomas Henshaw. Had it not been for this generous gift in his will, we would not have been able to provide the care and support to over 3000 blind and visually impaired people of all ages that we do today.
Making a will
Most of us put off making a will because it's something we don't want to think about. But making a will can also help you plan your finances and ensure that your assets are distributed in accordance with your wishes. Your requests will be carried out making arrangements easier on your family and friends.
Your estate may also be affected by Inheritance Tax. Your estate is the net value of everything you own - all your assets minus any debts. Currently Inheritance Tax is charged at 40% on anything above £312,000 (2008-09). More information about Inheritance Tax is available here.
All legacies to UK registered charities are free from inheritance tax, which can significantly reduce or eliminate the tax burden on your estate. Once your family and friends have been provided for, you may find you are able to leave a gift to Henshaws. A gift of any amount, no matter how small, would be very much appreciated.
